The displayed portrait of the last Quel'dorei Sun King, Anasterian Sunstrider, was recovered by the Curators of Thalassian Culture during one of their first major operations to a partially submerged Quel'dorei vault.

Protected by a watertight and warded case, the contents were unknown when the casing was returned to Dalaran, though the ornate nature of the protection was telling. Though the frame was quite badly chipped, presumably from being banged around as the structure it was found within began sinking, but due to a light warding applied to the painting itself, the damage taken by the frame was not shared by the portrait, and enough of the frame remained intact for a faithful replica to be designed.

The recovery of the portrait was a vital early discovery for the Curators, with its promise providing a morale boost as well as support for more ambitious future missions.

The painting is on display in the Hall of Thalassian Ancestry, the base of the Curators of Thalassian Culture near the Dalaran wishing well. It's protected by a series of wards, though when the Hall is open to guests, appear nearly transparent, and upon request and the discretion of Head Curator Entilzha Firesong, all visible wards can be briefly removed for scholarly or artistic analysis.

A signature or artists' mark is just visible on the lower left of the work, though the creator has yet to be identified.
